Vietnamese Soups

Pho Thanh & Cafe Inc.
(2108 N. 4th St., Coeur d' Alene)

Who else could serve the best Pho'(pronounced as -"Fah") other than the people where this delicious soup originated.

Every time I come and visit my family in Los Angeles, visiting Pho' Chinatown has been a staple in my trip itinerary, with that said, with the number of Pho' Houses in L.A. picking the best one is something that you have to leave judgement to your taste buds which brings me to my choice soup house here in Coeur d'Alene.

Pho Thanh is relatively new in the resto. biz here in our small town, they have an array of soup selections; from Beef, Shrimp, Pork, Chicken, Meatballs and Combinations.

My pick for their best soup is #11, It's a Beef soup served with rice noodles, medium to well done tenderloin steak strips (they really pile on the meat), tripe's(I know but please don't get icky on it, it gives such a good flavor to the soup) with a generous amount of Fresh Basil, Bean Sprouts, Sliced Jalapeno Peppers and a selection of Asian condiments on the side.

Another Good soup that they serve is their Chicken Wonton Soup, this one is served with a generous amount of sliced chicken breast and yummy delicious floating wontons, it is also served with a platter of Bean Sprouts, Fresh Basil, Jalapeno Peppers and Asian Condiments on the side.

The soup broth itself is very flavorful, nice and delicate not over-powered by seasonings, the selection of noodles in my opinion is appropriately matched with the dishes.

Pho Thanh's soup is almost like a comfort food - Whether it's spring, summer, fall or winter, there will be a soup in this resto. that will match your discriminating soup palette.

Pho Thanh also serve other native Vietnamese meals, so if soup is not your thing, try their delicious selection of native Vietnamese delicacies.

P.S.: PLEASE try their Vietnamese Spring Roll, yes I'm going to say it...It's divine! (Fresh Basil, perfectly cooked shrimp, delicious pieces of ground pork, miniature steamed rice noodles rolled in a soft wonton wrapper served with a sweet, salty and nutty Hoisin [Asian BBQ sauce] based dipping sauce.)

Salmon

The Fish Folks
(919 5th St. Coeur d'Alene)

Who would you trust when it comes to buying the freshest Salmon in town? How about "The Fish Folks - Dale & Victoria".

Sashimi Salmon is something that we simply could not get here in North Idaho until we saw the Fish Folks during one of downtown Coeur d'Alene's Farmers Market - Excellent Salmon, It is so fresh and has a wonderful texture as what you should expect in a Salmon Sashimi and of course, The most important part is, It doesn't smell fishy at all.

A quote popularized by Emeril Lagasse says " If it smells like a fish, It's not a dish!" I am happy to say that their fish is not smelly at all.

As I was driving on 4th Street today I saw the "Fish Folks" parked right by Pilgrims Natural Foods Market, I stopped and had a brief conversation with Dale and asked him about their best selling fish, I wasn't surprised when he told me that their Salmon & Halibut are their best sellers.

Getting a slab of salmon is easy, almost any store has one of them in their seafood aisle but to get quality seafood such as what the Fish Folks have is something that you should try...

...You just simply could not get quality seafood such as what they've got especially in our area.

To get more information about the Fish Folk's Fresh & Frozen Seafood and all Natural Elk Sausage/Burgers, You could contact them at (208) 667-5702

Blueberry Muffin

Perkins Restaurant & Bakery
(290 W. Appleway Ave.)

How many times have you had a Blueberry Muffin that immediately made you reach for the coffee or a glass of water. Well, sadly a lot of the blueberry muffins in our groceries and coffee shops lack one of the main component of a nicely baked muffin - "Moisture"

This is why Perkins Blueberry Muffin is my pick for one of the best Blueberry Muffin in Coeur d' Alene. I first stumbled upon their nicely baked blueberry muffin at the Moses Lake Perkins and it immediately caught my attention.

Moist, doesn't crumble, not greasy, just the right amount of raw sugar sprinkles on top and of course the existence of nice little blueberries which gives this muffin a lot of texture.

Buffet / All You Can Eat

Top of China Buffet
(757 Appleway Ave.)

Yummy!

Ok...Forget about the diet for a day and enjoy a delicious buffet lunch or dinner at Top of China,
I cannot specifically say my favorite (ok...it's the fresh cocktail shrimp) but Top of China has a wide selection of dishes for your discriminating taste.

Lunch Specials are served from 11:00 AM until 4:00 PM (so come on down and have an early dinner!) from 4:01 PM onwards will be dinner price.

Aside from the shrimp, I really love their Green beans, Spicy Chicken, Peppered Steak and General Tso's Chicken and of course who wouldn't enjoy a delicious serving of Soft Serve Ice Cream!

There's a lot to choose from it's up to you to pick what tickles your taste buds, just a word of caution though - Top of China is not the place if you plan to keep your new years resolution...opppsss (maybe next year)

For a once a month treat (at least for me) this Chinese Buffet Restaurant has a pretty reasonable price, just don't take your girlfriend or boyfriend here for a romantic dinner...the food is good but it has zero romantic ambiance (try Taco Bell....just kidding)

Bloomin' Onions / Blooming Onions

Outback Steakhouse
(1381 N. Northwood Center Ct. CDA)

Well........ served with a brain freezing cold Fosters beer, an appetizer such as this is very hard to miss, An Outback Original and they seem to have really mastered the art of making those crunchies stick to the munchies!

Unlike some bloomin onion copycats, the crunchy part of this delightful appetizer doesn't fall apart which gives it a nice texture and a whole lot of edge. Served with a nice dipping sauce, this appetizer sure hits the mark when it comes to starting off your meal or just having something to munch on during happy hours.

Don't forget the beer!!!, It doesn't matter what beer you like - this appetizer is best served with BEER...lol

For $6.99 you could split this Bloomin Delicious with a friend.

Steak House

Wolf Lodge Inn Restaurant
(Wolf Lodge, CDA )

Whether It's a Porter House, Fillet Mignon, New Yorker or a Cowboy Steak, Nothing else comes close to Wolf Lodge's delicious Steaks. Wonderfully cooked and seasoned it surely won't disappoint!

The ambiance of the place and aroma of steaks on the grill adds so much appeal to the whole meal and makes you feel that you are having the real deal, grab a beer while you wait and enjoy the whole experience.

Of all the restaurants and steaks that I have tried in Coeur d'Alene , nothing else comes close...I'm serious...nothing.

Served with their delicious assortment of side-dishes, the most difficult part is choosing which one of them to pick (although I really like the beans!)

I have nothing else to say about this Steak House but to go and try it for yourself, the cost is quite spendy BUT it is something worth trying at least once in your life, then you'll know what I mean.

Make a reservation early or a day or a week ahead, Walk-ins are seldom accommodated to reserve, call (208) 664-6665

Pizza

Papa Murphy's Pizza

Papa Murphy's uses fresh ingredients and makes your Pizza right in front of you! All you have to do is take it home and bake it according to the instructions provided.

I highly recommend the Thin Crust Delite (Meat) & Thin Crust Delite Herb Chicken Mediterranean for those who feel guilty about eating Pizza while on a diet, it has 40% less calories than their regular pizza's!

My other favorite if I'm really craving for Meaty "Forget about the workout"pizza is their Cowboy Pizza - they don't skimp on the meat!
